Welcome to this website!
This website forms part of our coursework for Literature in a World Context at the University of Aberdeen.
We chose to focus on the theme of how creative practices are a means by which to respond to transnationalism.
Transnationalism is the concept that culture transcends national borders just as people do, and that identity needs to be adapted in order to maintain one's origins and at the same time be accepted into the new environment. Upon being immersed in a foreign culture and country, we see how people use music, film, literature, art and photography as an outlet for their cultural heritage and a way to be heard in a new culture which perhaps suppresses their own. At the same time, the expression of one's heritage is inevitably tinged with hues acquired from the new culture. It is these art forms that we are exploring within this project. In addition, we examine the relationship between different cultures and the racial tensions that can arise in such situations. Transnationalism is a relatively new branch of academic study, one that defies traditional, binary definitions of nationality, and, arguably - considering the increasingly internationally minded nature of the modern era - one better suited to analysing the current social, cultural and political climate.
